State of Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau Informational Bulletin 99-1, September 1999; p. 72 )〕 == Background == Kubatzki was born in the part of Poland within the German Empire on May 12, 1877, and came to America with his parents at the age of two, the family locating in Milwaukee. He was educated in a parochial school and night school, and became a blacksmith by trade. He served in the Army's First Wisconsin Volunteers from the outbreak of the Spanish–American War until he was mustered out in October 1898. Returning home, he returned to his trade until he lost the use of two limbs due to a disease contracted while in the service, and had to dispose of his business.〔(Paul F., ed.
